These are E-Z peel, deveined shrimp. I was assured (as I was last
time, when the same thing happened) by the butcher that these were
deveined. Aren't we calling this a vein? I think it's actually shrimp
poop, but aren't we polietly referring to it that way? Please tell me
if I'm wrong/crazy. I'll be at the sink running a fork tine through my
shrimp while you answer.

Ew. I'd like to know the answer too. I rarely buy shrimp, other than the pre-bagged frozen kind, and this is one of the reasons why. I just don't wanna think about it.
ReplyDeleteNope that is the poo. They didn't take out the "vein" at all. When I discovered what that was it took a while before I'd have shrimp again.
ReplyDeleteI've heard it called a "sand vein" before. It's the shrimp's digestive tract filled with whatever the shrimp filters out of the water, sometimes even sand. Doesn't hurt you to eat it, but yeah, it's gross.
